Happy Birthday Madiba

What are you doing for Mandela Day?

How are you celebrating a legacy that is undoubtedly one of the most inspirational and timeless.

Make every day a Mandela Day

Make every day a Mandela Day

Today I have heard hundreds of different people and groups doing hundreds of different things in tribute of Mandela Day.  I thought I would share some stories with you that I thought were great.

But first what I’m doing for Mandela Day?

Our company has joined forces with local initiative The Society for Animals in Distress.  We have all been given collection tins and our aim is for everyone to collect R67.  This money is donated to Animals in Distress, which will help fund projects like Coal Yard ProjectSkills Development, Consulting Room/Clinic, as well as offer veterinary service to animals.    Plus the sound of coins rattling in a tin is so exciting! Love it

Bikers for Mandela Day

The Bikers for Mandela Day event focuses on spreading Nelson Mandela’s living legacy throughout South Africa. The focus of the initiative is active participation by all who attend, thereby taking forward Mr Mandela’s living legacy of doing good to inspire change in others’ lives.  These riders travel all over the country for a week, spreading the word and helping out along the way.

Today the Bikers for Mandela day travel to the University of the Free State (UFS) and Mangaung, Heidedal and Brandhof to go and help clean streets in the community.

Following their 67 minutes of cleaning streets, the bikers will return to the University of the Free State where they will participate and highlight the efforts of the “No Student Hungry” campaign of the UFS.

The No Student Hungry Programme (NSH) aims to raise funds to provide modest food bursaries for needy students and give them daily access to a balanced meal at the University of the Free State.

Hands Across South Africa

Imagine a South Africa where everyone joined forces to work together towards a vibrant, integrated country?  Local radio dj, Gareth Cliff and 5FM this Mandela Day, Thursday 18th July 2013, at 8.45 created some “Madiba Magic” by initiating a movement to join hands across South Africa for 67 seconds as a gesture of unity and commitment to making our country a better place.  Thanks to Nelson Mandela we have a chance to pioneer, to take our place on the high ground of doing good and showing the world how we might spread our positive influence and energy, not only to those who need it most but indeed, to each other.

When Madiba made his last international speech at the 46664 concert for his 90th birthday in Hyde Park, he told us:  “It’s in your hands to make the world a better place.” On July 18th – and beyond – we all strive to deliver our side of the bargain.

Let’s Go Skippin’

A man called into the radio this morning with such a clever idea.  This man, lets call him Bob, has been running since 1995, winning numerous medals along the way.  Bob’s wife constantly complains about the space his medals take up in their draws and cupboards.  So to solve the medal clutter and give some inspiration to the local community, Bob is hosting a skipping initiative at the Mandela House.   His aim is for every child who can learn to skip and skip 100 times will be awarded one of his medals (a collection of Comrades, 2 Oceans, etc).  This is such a brilliant idea.  Not only is he teaching kids to skip, have fun and make friends, but also encouraging them to aspire to something.  Bob’s reasoning is when someone is focused and dedicated to fitness and sport, be it running or walking or skipping, there is no time for laziness, complacency, theft, drugs, bad behaviour, etc.  I fully support this idea – one man’s attempt to inspire fitness among kids.
